War with the Enemy: Palm Sunday

Worship Scripture: 1 Peter 5:8-9 NIV

Hosanna (Praise is Rising) (Brenton Brown & Paul Baloche, 2005)

This is Palm Sunday… the day of the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The day where everyone was praising Jesus as the Messiah. The beginning of week where the enemy would use the desires of men, whether it be for power or money, to corrupt those same people to the point of crucifying the Son of God. The enemy is always seeking ways to keep the impact of Jesus to minimum.

1 Peter 5:8-9 NIV 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

We are at war with the enemy. The enemy will seek any way he can to destroy us. He hates us. He will point us back to the world or our flesh. His goal is to make our fruit rot, our lives miserable, and destroy or impact for God… but we can praise God that He has defeated the enemy.

War with the Flesh

Basically ourselves… our wants… placing our desires before God … this includes things of the world

Lily of the Valley (Charles W. Fry & William Shakespeare Hays, 1881, Public Domain)

Take My Life (Holiness) (Scott Underwood, 1995)

Love the Lord (Lincoln Brewster, 2005)

We are at War… Last week I talked about war with the world. This week is about war with ourselves. So, what does war with ourselves look like? Basically it is our wants, our desires, and placing them before God and His will.

James 4:1-4  (NIV) 4 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.  4 You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

Isn’t funny how our war against ourselves also has in it the desires of the things of the world. We desire these things to show our greatness, to show our worth, to show that we belong… all of which show that we desire to put ourselves before God. We are not alone in these desires… but we must recognize them, and Surrender them to God.

We Are at War with the World

Worship Scripture: Matthew 14:25-31

I Will Celebrate (Rita Baloche, 1990)

Heavenly Sunlight (George Harrison Cook & Henry J. Zelley, 1899, Public Domain)

On Feb 25th, we talked about being an ambassador for Jesus.
On March 4th, we talked about skills and why we don’t use them. What stops us from using them? We are at war.

We are at war! The next few weeks we’re going to talk about us being at war with the world, our flesh, and ultimately Satan… let me give you a spoiler alert… it Ends with Victory in Jesus overcoming the grave

What are we at war with?

What is war with the world. The things around us that distract us from worshiping God

Matthew 14:25-31

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.  27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

We can be a lot like Peter in our lives. We go from celebrating, singing to the Lord, living in that heavenly sunlight, even, seemingly, walking on water one second, to afraid or distracted by the world the next. We’ve all been at war in our lives with world. Whether it is battling bills, work issues, family trouble, or many other things this world throws at us, these are the waves coming at us to distract us from Jesus calling us out to walk in the water with Him. Maybe you feel like you are losing a battle with one of these things. Peter “cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.”

Jesus won’t just call us out onto those waters without a plan to keep us safe.

Skill is a Gift from God for His Glory

Worship Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:4-6

Serve the Lord with Gladness (B. B. McKinney, 1959)

Last week I discussed being a new creation, and as so an ambassador of Christ. How do we become ambassadors? By using the gifts and skills God gave us.

Make Me A Blessing (George S. Schuler & Ira Bishop Wilson, 1924)

Let Others See Jesus in You (B. B. McKinney, 1924)

1 Corinthians 12:4-6 New International Version (NIV)  4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

1 Peter 4:10 New International Version (NIV)   10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

God gives us gifts, asks us to refine them to skill. Skill doesn’t just happen… it takes work. Just because we make it a skill, doesn’t always mean we glorify God with it.

If we are signposts for Jesus by how we live, how does your signpost look? Is it pointing to Jesus, is it it a little worn down or broken, does it need some work? I am an example of a broken sign post pointing the wrong direction. I am guilty of developing a skill and using it to attempt to glorify myself.

I used to want to be a rock star. Write songs, hear them on the radio, play them in front of thousands of people, and all the fame and glory that comes with that. So, I developed a bit of skill on the guitar, joined a few bands, and started gigging. Going from bar to bar playing my and my bandmates music. Rock music fosters an environment of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. While I luckily didn’t get caught up in that mess, I was around it constantly and it begins to warp your mind. It got to the point where I didn’t enjoy performing any more. I still liked writing songs, but not necessarily what I was writing about. I was lost. I was a young (new) Christian, but you couldn’t tell by how I lived in my band. I eventually quit the bands and had to step back ask God in. Ask Him what I should be doing. Ask Him to search my heart and guide me to use His gifts He gave me for Him. Where are you this morning with your gifts? For me, I had to realize that the gifts I was given were not for my glory, but for the Glory of my Savior who died for me. Because without Him I am nothing

Reconciled Ambassadors of Christ

Worship Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21

Since Jesus Came Into My Heart (Charles Hutchinson Gabriel & Rufus H. McDaniel, 1914, Public Domain)

What a wonderful change in my life, since Jesus came into my heart.

2 Corinthians 5:17-21

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin[b] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

It is just amazing to think of what our Messiah did for us. To make us a new creation. He changes us so much that we go from being completely lost in sin, to ambassadors of Jesus! Even when we were (are) still full of sin, He who knew no sin, became our sin… He became my sin! So that we might be the righteousness of God.

This is Our Offering

Worship Scripture: Romans 12:1

All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name (Edward Perronet, John Rippon, & Oliver Holden, 1779, Public Domain)

This last Wednesday was Valentine’s Day. Did what you gave to your significant other give you brownie points, or land you in the pit of misery? (Dilly, dilly). What determines the value of our gifts and offerings?

Romans 12:1 – NIV  Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God–this is your true and proper worship.

I’ve shared this verse many times, and read it even more, but I’ve never really focused on the words “to offer.” I’ve seen living sacrifice, God’s mercy, and true and proper worship as main themes in this verse, but it is the offering that God seeks. We can sacrifice our lives in many ways that don’t glorify God. We can tout God’s mercy without ever actually receiving or, as is more often is the case, not extend it to others. We can worship, or think we are worshiping, without ever recognizing the presence of God. None of those things matter without intentionally making them your offering to God. Consider this verse from the next song:

Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were offering far to small, love so amazing so divine, demands my soul my life my all.

Nothing we have here can be great enough to to give as an offering to God for what he gave us, but He isn’t all that interested in the things we give. He wants that what we give, we give of ourselves. That they are truly sacrificial offerings just as he sacrificed for us.

Are We Ready?

Worship Scripture: Matthew 24:40-44

Days of Elijah (Robin Mark, 1996)

Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him Matthew 24:40-44.

Are we ready? Are we really ready for the return of Jesus? In my life, I have seen many predictions of when the world will end. I’m sure those of you that have been here longer than me have seen even more.  It was even supposed to happen last November. Every time one of these predictions takes place, you have people preparing to either survive what is coming or praying for some sort of salvation. Then it passes, and they go back to normal. They were prepared when they thought they knew the time, but this scripture and others let us know that we do not know when Jesus is coming, just that He is. We are supposed to keep watch, to stay prepared, to be ready. We do this by reading God’s word and staying in prayer. Are you ready?

Make Jesus the Priority

Worship Scripture: Colossians 1:16-17

Christ is Enough (Jonas Myrin & Reuben Morgan, 2012)

Love the Lord (Lincoln Brewster, 2005)

Colossians 1:16-17.   16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Last week we discussed how Jesus is the only mediator between us and God, and the week before that we discussed the power of God. The scripture is showing the power and ultimate authority of Jesus. This shows the importance of keeping Jesus our main priority. “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together”

When Jesus is first, everything else goes the way it is supposed to.

Hebrews 10:12
Matthew 27:51
1 Timothy 2:5

All the Earth Will Sing Your Praises (Paul Baloche, 2003)

Isaiah 59:2 (NIV)
2 But your iniquities have separated
you from your God;
your sins have hidden his face from you,
so that he will not hear.

That’s a pretty bold statement since we just sang , “All the Earth Will Sing Your Praises.”  Your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.  We are sinners, right? Ever told a lie? You’re a liar. Ever had an impure thought about someone? You’re an adulterer. Ever done something for yourself, not because it would glorify God? You’re an idolator. We have all sinned. This makes it impossible for us to commune with a holy God that cannot be around sin. He must punish sin. Lucky for us He made a way.

Hebrews 10:11 NIV 11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.

Every year priests would make sacrifices to help cleanse the sins of God’s people. There was even a prescribed time when the holiest of God’s people would enter the holiest of of holies (behind the veil that separates from God) and sacrifice the holiest of animals. All this an attempt to purify God’s people. This was never enough. Jesus was the only perfect sacrifice that could take away our sins.

Hebrews 10:12 NIV 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,

Matthew 27:51 New International Version
At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split.

The sacrifice of the Messiah opened a way for us to commune with God.

Our God is Big!

Worship Scripture: Ephesians 3:20-21 NASB

Our God (Chris Tomlin, Jesse Reeves, Jonas Myrin, & Matt Redman, 2010)

Great is Thy Faithfulness (1923)

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.
Ephesians 3:20‭-‬21 NASB

We have a great and mighty God capable of doing all things, amen? Why do we sometimes make Him so small? Bob Kauflin (2008), in his book Worship Matters, says:

“What size does God appear to be when our mind is preoccupied with all the cares, worries, and concerns of life. Very small.

But God is not small. He is great. Magnifying and cherishing his greatness is at the heart of biblical worship”

If we think about everything that God is:

He is infinite

He is omnipotent

He is just

He is pure

He is holy

He is righteous

He is omniscient

He is omnipresent

He is perfect

He is all these things and so much more, yet we try to put Him in a box. The God you trust with your salvation is bigger than the concerns we have in this life. As we sing the words of this next song (read first verse of Your Great Name) focus on the power of our God.

Crown Him with Many Crowns (George Job Elvey, Godfrey Thring, & Matthew Bridges, 1851, Public Domain)

How Deep the Father’s Love for Us (Stuart Townend, 1995)

2 Corinthians 5:14‭-‬15 NASB: For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.
https://bible.com/bible/100/2co.5.14-15.NASB

Who do we live for? Do we live to make money, to impress our friends or neighbors, to have the latest and greatest gadgets, or do we live for the One that died for all of us? It is easy sometimes to show up here and live for Jesus on Sunday and Wednesday, but lose sight of that in the rat race the rest of the week. Sometimes it even is difficult to stay focused during service with everything that is going on in our lives. This is where we must lean on each other for encouragement to keep our focus on Jesus. We must stay focused on the love of Christ and allow it to control us, to guide us. To no longer live for ourselves, “but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf”.

Christ is Our Great Light Sunday

Worship Scripture: Isaiah 9:2-6

Christ is Enough (Jonas Myrin & Reuben Morgan, 2012)

Read Isaiah 9:2-6

You Never Let Go (Beth Redman & Matt Redman, 2005)

Isaiah 9:2-6:  2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. 3 You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder. 4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. 5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire. 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Last week, we heard examples of people in darkness seeing a great light. Their burdens were lifted and their joy was increased. We were not left by God. He never leaves us in darkness. He sent His Son as the light. Those names mentioned by Isaiah were shared by Mike on Christmas Eve. He is our counselor, a Mighty God, an everlasting Father, who is the one to bring us peace.

Your Grace is Enough (Matt Maher, 2003)

2 Corinthians 12:9 NASB     And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

As we head into the new year and set our goals and make our plans, we must remember that no matter what happens or has happened in our lives, no matter how we succeed or how many times we fail, remember to keep Christ the center of all things. His grace is sufficient for us. Christ is enough for us.
